Random information on the term “SENTRY”:

Sentry is a short story written by Fredric Brown in 1954. It is considered a classic of science fiction and has appeared in numerous anthologies.

The protagonist is a soldier involved in an interplanetary war against an alien species, the only other intelligent race in the galaxy, which is located on a remote planet, fifty thousand light years from home. He is overseeing his position in the trenches and suffers for the distance, for the hostile environment (he is soaked, covered in mud and can hardly move because gravity is twice that of his planet) and for the privations caused by the war. Suddenly an unexpected sound puts him on alert: an enemy attempts to get close, but the soldier sees him, takes aim, fires and kills him.

The story is narrated in order to push the reader to identify with the protagonist. In the last phrase, however, the plot takes a twist, in a surprise ending that makes the reader reconsider the whole narrative.

It is a very short story (less than one page), according to what is one of the most typical narrative formats of the author, and is based on a very simple idea. Despite this, one of the qualities recognized in this story is the fact of being representative of one aspect often considered fundamental in the science fiction genre, the ability to compel the readers to question their own prejudices, using the fantastic to present an unusual view of reality.
