Random information on the term “NEAR”:

Official insignia of the Mars Pathfinder mission.

Mars Pathfinder (MESUR Pathfinder) is an American robotic spacecraft that landed a base station with a roving probe on Mars in 1997. It consisted of a lander, renamed the Carl Sagan Memorial Station, and a lightweight (10.6 kg/23 lb) wheeled robotic Mars rover named Sojourner, which became the first rover to operate outside the Earth–Moon system.

Launched on December 4, 1996 by NASA aboard a Delta II booster a month after the Mars Global Surveyor was launched, it landed on July 4, 1997 on Mars’s Ares Vallis, in a region called Chryse Planitia in the Oxia Palus quadrangle. The lander then opened, exposing the rover which conducted many experiments on the Martian surface. The mission carried a series of scientific instruments to analyze the Martian atmosphere, climate, geology and the composition of its rocks and soil. It was the second project from NASA’s Discovery Program, which promotes the use of low-cost spacecraft and frequent launches under the motto “cheaper, faster and better” promoted by the then administrator, Daniel Goldin. The mission was directed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), a division of the California Institute of Technology, responsible for NASA’s Mars Exploration Program. The project manager was JPL’s Tony Spear.

Random information on the term “NEXT”:

Next is a short film created by Aardman Animations. Its full title is “Next: The Infinite Variety Show.”

Imdb explains the plot: “William Shakespeare, without saying a word, gives a quick run through of all his plays in a very special audition.”

The film was commissioned by Channel 4 as part of a 5-part series of Aardman animations called “Lip Synch”: Creature Comforts (1989), Going Equipped (1990), Ident (1990), Next (1990) and War Story (1989). Imdb explains: “The “sunburst” which rotates behind William Shakespeare in the “Cymbeline” sequence was not present in the original storyboard nor fabricated for this purpose. Rather, it comes from a clock which was discovered by the director, by chance, in a skip nearby the studio on the day that scene was to be filmed.”

Peter looks like Peter Hall and is reading one of Hall’s books. The halo indicates that he represents Saint Peter, and that Shakespeare is auditioning to get into Heaven. The film references many Shakespeare plays.

Random information on the term “CLOSE”:

The striatum (also the neostriatum and the striate nucleus) is one of the nuclei in the subcortical basal ganglia of the forebrain. The striatum is a critical component of the motor and reward systems; receives glutamatergic and dopaminergic inputs from different sources; and serves as the primary input to the rest of the basal ganglia nuclei.

Functionally, the striatum coordinates multiple aspects of cognition, including motor- and action- planning, decision-making, motivation, reinforcement, and reward perception. Structurally, when the globus pallidus (pale globe) is included with the striatum, they form the corpus striatum structure. The lentiform nucleus refers to the putamen of the dorsal striatum and the globus pallidus.

In primates, the striatum is divided into ventral and dorsal subdivisions, based upon function and connections. The ventral striatum consists of the nucleus accumbens and the olfactory tubercle. The dorsal striatum consists of the caudate nucleus and the putamen. A white matter, nerve tract (the internal capsule) in the dorsal part separates the caudate nucleus and the putamen. Anatomically, the term striatum describes the striped (striated) appearance of the grey-and-white matter that composes said structure of the brain.
