The politics of Albania take place within the framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic. The political system is laid out in the 1998 constitution, the Kushtetuta. The Prime Minister (Kryeministri) is the head of government of a multi-party system. The President (Presidenti) is the head of state and holds a largely ceremonial position.

The Executive power is exercised by the cabinet of Albania (Këshilli i Ministrave), presided over by the Prime Minister. Legislative power is vested in both the government (Qeveria) as well as in the parliament (Kuvendi). The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. Since 1991, the introduction of pluralism, the party system is dominated by the Democratic and the post-communist Socialist. Parliamentary elections are held every four years, the most recent in 2013.

Head of state is the President (Presidenti). The president is indirectly elected to a 5-year term by the Assembly by secret ballot, requiring a two-thirds majority of the votes of all deputies. He has the power to guarantee observation of the constitution and all laws, act as commander-in-chief of the Albanian Armed Forces, exercise the duties of the Assembly, when the Assembly is not in session, and appoint the Prime Minister. The president has the power to declare war, to grant pardon and to conclude agreements of peace, alliance, and participation in international organizations; upon the request of the government a simple parliamentary majority is required to ratify such actions, agreements, or treaties.
