Random information on the term “ARES”:

The Aerial Reconfigurable Embedded System (ARES) is a concept for an unmanned VTOL flight module that can transport various payloads. The concept started as the TX (Transformer) in 2009 for a terrain-independent transportation system centered on a ground vehicle that could be configured into a VTOL air vehicle and carry four troops. ARES’ primary function is still the same as TX, to use flight to avoid ground-based transportation threats like ambushes and IEDs for units that don’t have helicopters for those missions. It is to be powered by twin tilting ducted fans and have its own power system, fuel, digital flight controls, and remote command-and-control interfaces. The flight module will have different detachable mission modules for specific purposes including cargo delivery, CASEVAC, and ISR. Up to 3,000 lb (1,400 kg) of payload will be carried by a module.

The DARPA TX, or Transformer, was a 5-year, 3-phase roadable aircraft effort coordinated by DARPA for the United States military.

Random information on the term “MINOS”:

The Cowan–Reines neutrino experiment was performed by Clyde L. Cowan and Frederick Reines in 1956. This experiment confirmed the existence of the antineutrino—a neutrally charged subatomic particle with very low mass.

During the 1910s and 1920s, through the study of electron spectra from the nuclear beta decay, it became apparent that, in addition to an electron, another particle with very small mass and with no electric charge is emitted in the beta-decay but not observed. The observed electron energy spectrum was continuous. Assuming energy conservation, this is only possible if the beta decay is a three-body rather than a two-body decay: the latter would produce a monochromatic peak rather than a continuous energy spectrum. This and other reasons led Wolfgang Pauli to postulate the existence of the neutrino in 1930.

Via the inverse beta decay, the predicted electron antineutrino (

Random information on the term “ARCAS”:

Loki, officially designated 76mm HEAA Rocket T220, was an American unguided anti-aircraft rocket based on the German Taifun. Like the Taifun, Loki never saw service in its original role, but later found widespread use as a sounding rocket. It was so successful in this role that several advanced versions were developed on the basic Loki layout, including the final Super Loki.

As part of their anti-aircraft development program of 1942, the Luftwaffe began developing a number of guided missile projects. However, there was concern that these would not develop in time to be useful in the 1943/44 time frame. To fill the gap, Scheufeln suggested building a simple unguided rocket that would be fired en-masse directly up into the bomber streams. The result was the Taifun.

Taifun was powered by a hypergolic mixture pressure-fed into the combustion chamber. The pressure was provided by small cordite charges that were fired into the fuel tanks, in the process bursting a pair of thin diaphragms to allow the fuel and oxidizer to flow into the combustion chamber. The Germans were never able to get the engine to work reliably, and the rocket was never deployed operationally.
