Halifax is located within Miꞌkmaꞌki the traditional ancestral lands of the Miꞌkmaq peoples. The Mi’kmaq have resided in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island since prior to European landings in North America in the 1400s and 1500s to set up fisheries. The Mi’kmaq name for Halifax is Kjipuktuk, pronounced “che-book-took”. The name means “Great Harbour” in the Mi’kmaq language.
