Like the Flesch–Kincaid grade level, Gunning fog index, SMOG index, Fry readability formula, and Coleman–Liau index, it produces an approximate representation of the US grade level needed to comprehend the text.

The formula for calculating the automated readability index is given below:

where characters is the number of letters and numbers, words is the number of spaces, and sentences is the number of sentences, which were counted manually by the typist when the above formula was developed. Non-integer scores are always rounded up to the nearest whole number, so a score of 10.1 or 10.6 would be converted to 11.

As a rough guide, US grade level 1 corresponds to ages 6–8. Reading level grade 8 corresponds to the typical reading level of a 14-year-old US child. Grade 12, the highest US secondary-school grade before college, corresponds to the reading level of a 17-year-old.

The company is best known for developing first installment of the Far Cry series (later sequels and spin-offs being developed by Ubisoft) and the Crysis series, the open world nature of their games which showcase the company’s CryEngine, and for pushing the limits on PC specifications to achieve advanced graphics and gameplay. Their most recent major products were the 2013 Ryse: Son of Rome, released as a launch title for the Xbox One, and its supporting iteration of their CryEngine. Some of Crytek’s current and past business partners include Electronic Arts, Mail.Ru Group, Ubisoft, Microsoft Studios, Nexon, Tencent, Amazon.com, Sony, Apple Inc., Nvidia, Intel, AMD, FMOD, Scaleform and Xoreax Software.

Crytek was founded by the Yerli brothers in 1999 in Coburg, Germany.[citation needed] Crytek’s first major project was Engalus, a first-person shooter with a cyberpunk theme and role-playing elements, which was first privately shown at E3 in 2000. The project first attracted publicity for the company at the 2000 ECTS with their tech demo at the NVIDIA booth, but was subsequently cancelled. For several years thereafter, they released numerous demos of a game called X-Isle, which ultimately evolved into Far Cry. On 2 May 2002 Crytek announced the game engine CryEngine.
