Random information on the term “EGO”:

The id, ego and super-ego are three distinct, yet interacting agents in the psychic apparatus defined in Sigmund Freud’s model of the psyche.

According to Freud, the id is the wholly unconscious agent that consists of drives and the repressed; the super-ego is a partly conscious agent that permanently seeks to fulfill the ideal self as first identified in early childhood; and the ego is the interactive agent that forms coherent organization of mental processes and mediates between the desires of the id and the super-ego. The ego is largely attached to consciousness, but it can transition into preconscious censorship, and can emanate resistance, and is therefore capable of being unconscious.

The ego seeks to bring the influence of the external world to bear upon the id; it represents reason and common sense, whereas the id harbors one’s deep seated passions.

As Freud explained:

“The ego is like a man on horseback who has to hold in check the superior strength of the horse, the rider is obliged to guide it where the horse wants to go in the same way the ego is in the habit of transforming the id’s will into action as if it were its own” (p.19).
